Let’s explore cursive type families from around the world — hands on
A Case for Cursive is an exhibition that showcases how the tangible practice of cursive handwriting can be expressed through modern technology.
As part of the exhibition, we created an interactive application that allows the audience to view and compare cursive scripts from different cultures around the world.
Try & Type
While browsing through all the sections in the exhibition, the audience gets to learn about not only the evolution but also the visual form of cursive writing.
There is an interactive experience that invites the audience to type their own text and experiment with its size and weight.
Two tell the difference
When the "compare" button is toggled, the input field will be split into two areas where the audience can compare the cursive writing style of two regions.
Post & Share
A series of questions related to cursive handwriting was designed in advance, so that everyone gets to contribute their response to the exhibition while playing with it.
Additionally, it is very easy to save and share the writing as a personal souvenir. Once the audience "submits" their response, a shareable visual featuring the audience’s writing is generated, formatted to the exact dimensions of an Instagram Story.
This project transformed handwriting from a static subject of display into an interactive activity, extending the experience beyond the physical space and turning individual participation into a lasting, shareable outcome.
Even though handwriting is declining in the digital era, cursive typography still has a significant impact across different cultures.
